This ancient ceramic whistle was discovered near the village of Kopachiv, Obukhiv Raion, Kyiv Oblast — in the forested valley east of the Dnipro River, not far from the well-documented Trypillia archaeological complex. The item was found during private gardening work on land previously considered untouched, revealing an unexpectedly shallow cultural layer containing small pottery fragments and this nearly intact whistle.
Hand-shaped from local clay and bearing faint ornamental lines, the whistle was likely used in ceremonial settings — possibly to imitate bird calls or accompany early agricultural rituals. Despite its age, the form remains well preserved, and it still emits a soft tone when blown.
This artifact offers not only a glimpse into the ritual soundscape of Neolithic Ukraine but also a rare, tactile connection to Europe’s oldest agrarian culture.
